Workforce development remains a critical priority for the transportation and construction industries, as agencies and partners work to inspire the next generation to pursue careers that build and maintain our infrastructure. Events like the annual Florida Construction Career Days play a vital role in introducing students to the wide range of opportunities available — many of which extend beyond traditional construction roles.

At the 2026 Florida Construction Career Days, Global-5 supported this mission on behalf of its client, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), by leading a communications-focused learning lab. Working in coordination with the District Five Communications Office, the team provided students with a behind-the-scenes look at careers in public information and communications within the transportation industry.

More than 300 students participated in the PIO Learning Lab during the 2026 Florida Construction Career Days, a two-day career showcase held annually at the Volusia County Fairgrounds.

Over the course of two days, more than 300 students participated in the interactive session, which highlighted the essential role that public information officers play in construction projects. The learning lab introduced students to how transportation professionals communicate construction activities and impacts to the public, including road and lane closures, detours, and major construction operations.

Students explored the wide range of tools used in the field, from social media and targeted email alerts to door-to-door outreach and media relations, that demonstrate how communication is critical to safety, mobility, and public awareness.

By the Numbers

  • 300 – PIO Learning Lab participants
  • 3,500 – 2026 Construction Career Days participants
  • 42 – 2026 Construction Career Days exhibitors

To bring these concepts to life, students participated in hands-on activities. They reviewed a sample media release developed by Global-5 and identified key messages related to safety and traffic efficiency — FDOT’s top priorities. They also collaborated to refine peer-developed talking points, learning how professionals distill complex information into clear, effective messaging.

The session also emphasized the growing importance of digital communication. A display board featuring FDOT’s social media platforms illustrated how agencies connect with the public in real time and engage younger audiences through modern channels.

The experience concluded with a live demonstration of a media interview, giving students the opportunity to step into both interviewer and spokesperson roles. This interactive component helped reinforce communication skills while showcasing a dynamic and often overlooked career path within the construction and transportation industries.

By engaging students in this way, FDOT continues to broaden awareness of the diverse career opportunities available and strengthen the pipeline of future professionals who will help shape Florida’s transportation system.

“Workforce development starts with exposure. When students see the full range of opportunities in transportation, from engineering and project management to safety and communications, they begin to envision a future for themselves in the industry.”
